The leader of a group organized to fight the state’s anti-smoking law is in danger of losing the liquor license for his bar. Brian Froehlich, president of the Iowa Bar Owners Coalition, operates Fro’s Pub and Grub in Wilton.

The Iowa Attorney General’s Office has filed a complaint with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, alleging Froehlich is openly failing to comply with the new state law which bans smoking in bars. During a court hearing last month, Froehlich admitted to an attorney for the state that he had decided not to enforce the state’s ban on smoking in his establishment.

Froehlich told the court he had posted the required no-smoking sign on the door of his bar, but it was inside the door — visible to patrons as they leave rather than arrive — and upside down to boot. Froehlich says one of his customers flipped the sign upside down and he left it that way.

A hearing on the license for Fro’s has been set for October 15th. The first hearing on the new law involving a West Burlington bar is set for September 29th.
