Hawkeye Brodell named Big 10 Special Teams Player of the Week

September 15, 2008 By admin

University of Iowa senior wide receiver and punt returner Andy Brodell is the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Hawkeyes 17-5 win over Iowa State Saturday.

Brodell, a senior from Ankeny, put the game away with an 81-yard punt return touchdown with just over six minutes left in the game. The 6-3, 200-pound wide receiver recorded his first punt return score and established a new career best, surpassing his 78-yard punt return against Syracuse last season.

Brodell is the first Hawkeye to return a punt for a touchdown since Jovon Johnson went 90 yards against Ball State in 2005. Brodell also caught two passes against the Cyclones as Iowa pushed its record to 3-0.

This marks the first weekly Big Ten honor of Brodell’s career. The last Hawkeye to win the special team’s award was Ryan Donahue following Iowa’s win over Michigan State last year.

The Hawkeyes continue non-conference play Saturday at Pittsburgh (1-1).
