Police in the Des Moines metro area are investigating a fatal car crash that occurred shortly after a report of a stolen vehicle. The crash happened at 5:20 this morning in Clive.

Witnesses told police that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly 80 miles per hour, when it left the road and rolled down a culvert. The driver, who has not been identified, was thrown from the car.

The vehicle was stolen from an area near Drake University just minutes before the crash. The owner of the car, Dawn O’Brien, told police she left the car running while she was delivering newspapers.

O’Brien saw the man get in her car and said he appeared to be about 25-years-old. Police say the man was carrying identification, but it does not appear to be his I.D.
