Southbound Interstate-35 was shut down for several hours just north of Osceola Sunday after an early morning accident involving a semi. At about six o’clock Sunday morning a semi going north on Interstate 35 hit a bridge near New Virginia, flipped over and caught fire.

It burned for several hours and the Iowa State Patrol closed a four-mile stretch of southbound I-35. In addition, over a dozen nearby homes were evacuated for about six hours as a precaution. The semi was carrying fertilizer that’s highly flammable. The semi driver had only minor injuries, got some stitches at the hospital in Osceola and was released.
