The I-R-S says there are still several thousand people in Iowa who have not filed to get their 2007 income tax rebate. I-R-S spokesman, Christopher Miller, says those people have until October 15th to get in the needed paperwork.

He says they estimate there are more than 37,000 Iowans, mostly seniors and veterans age 65 and older that have not filed for the rebate. Miller is asking friends and families to get the message out so the people due the payment take advantage.

Miller says it could mean an extra $300 per person, or $600 for those married filing jointly. He asks anyone with an elderly friend or a grandparent to check with them to be sure they filed to get their money. Miller isn’t sure what’s kept them from seeking the payment.

He says it might not be on their radar screen if they don’t normally file a tax return, and that’s why they’re asking family and friends to get involved. Miller says they have to file a tax return by the October 15th deadline to be eligible. Miller says the first step is to check to see if you’re due some money.

Miller says one of the biggest qualifications is earning three-thousand dollars in earned income, or benefit income. He says you should go to the I-R-S website at I-R-S-dot-gov to learn more. Miller says the I-R-S has accounted for nearly 80-percent of the Social Security and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries initially identified as potentially eligible.
