Dordt wants to build on first varsity win

October 14, 2008 By admin

Dordt College earned its first ever varsity football victory Saturday with a 17-14 home win over the Concordia Bulldogs in a Great Plains Conference matchup. Head Coach John Heavner said there was a lot of excitement in the locker room especially for the players who were there from the beginning.

Heavner says there are six or eight players who were with him from the beginning and others in the first recruiting class, so to go out and win when many didn’t give them a chance is "very gratifying." There have been a lot of firsts for the program and Heavner says the Defenders can now approach things like any other established program.

Heavner says he’s proud of the team and happy for them, and hopefully this will give them a boost for the final five games. The focus now for Dordt football is on improvement. He says they want to get the best 11 on the field and play the best that they can.
