One person died, five were hurt, when the car they were in crashed into a tree Monday night near Oakland, in western Iowa’s Pottawattamie County. Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sergeant Duane Ritchie says the victims — all Hispanic — were enroute to work Oakland Foods when the crash occurred at around 11:10 P.M.

He says the victims’ car was traveling eastbound on Highway Six when it left the roadway and hit a tree. Upon deputies’ arrival, one person was found walking outside the vehicle, two were lying on the ground, and the others were trapped in the car. Emergency crews used the "jaws of life" to remove the remaining occupants of the vehicle.

The victims were taken to hospitals in Council Bluffs. One was transferred to an Omaha hospital trauma unit where he later died about three hours after the crash. The names of the victims have not yet been released, and investigators were on the scene this morning trying to piece together what happened.
