A van hauling inmates from a Tennessee jail rear-ended a school bus in Waterloo this morning, injuring several people. The accident happened at about 7 a.m. on U.S. Highway 63 on the northern edge of the city. The van collided with the rear of the Waterloo school bus, but no one on the bus was injured.

However, several of the inmates were trapped inside the van and had to be freed by emergency workers. The inmates were taken to area hospitals for treatment, but there’s no word on the severity of their injuries. The van was totaled. Damage to the school bus was minor.

The van was in the process of transferring prisoners, but information on their destination was not released. Two correctional officers were also in the van, but there’s no word if they were injured.
