Iowa loses close one after last second miss

December 3, 2008 By admin

The strategy that worked in a victory at the buzzer against Kansas State backfired on Iowa coach Todd Lickliter last night. Trailing by two in the waning seconds at Boston College Lickliter decided not to use a timeout. Freshman Abdrew Brommer was fouled just before time expired and missed the front end of the one and one as the Hawks fell 57-55 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Brommer was just three of 14 from the line heading into the game.

Lickliter says in hindsight he wishes he had called a timeout and made an adjustment. He says he made a mistake in not doing that. The game was decided on the boards as Boston College held a 36-22 advantage in rebounding. Lickliter says they missed many layups and let Boston College get too many rebounds, and that’s what cost them them game.

Lickliter says the Hawks need to do a better job on the boards, as he says you have to be really strong, as he says strength is never a negative. Lickliter says his team has to do more work in the weight room. Matt Gatens and Devan Bawinkel each had 12 points to lead the Hawkeyes who fall to 6-2.
