Today is the start of what law enforcement officials call “National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend.” Jessica Lown of the Iowa Department of Public Safety says its part of the ongoing efforts to improve the safety on interstate highways.

Lown says state troopers will be out working extra shifts and hours throughout the state to crack down on drunk driving, seatbelt violations and speeding. Lown says nearly one thousand people were given a speeding ticket or warning during the holiday last year and 15 were arrested for drunk driving.

Lown says you should keep up the safe driving habits even after you leave the state. Lown says the effort will take place in Illinois, Nebraska and other states, so you should still drive responsibly. The effort runs through Sunday.
