Two Council Bluffs high school wrestlers die in wreck

December 29, 2008 By admin

Two Council Bluffs men were killed and another was injured during a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning, near the Mall of the Bluffs.

According to police, 18-year-olds Derek Underwood and Zachary Mendoza were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Nineteen-year-old Dustin Congdon walked away from the scene to a nearby grocery store to call for help. He was later transported by private vehicle to a local Hospital where he was listed in stable condition late Sunday night. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

The three men were traveling south on Madison Avenue at around 1:20 a.m. when the car they were in went out of control, skidded and hit a mailbox before colliding with a utility pole. The driver of the car was not identified.

Underwood and Mendoza had competed as wrestlers at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson High School. Counselors will be on-hand today at the school to help students and friends of the teens deal with their deaths. The accident remains under investigation.
