A southeast Iowa woman is dead after a house fire last night. Around 10 o’clock Sunday night, Burlington police and fire departments responded to a report of smoke coming from a house in a residential neighborhood on the city’s north side. Firefighters arrived at the small, one-and-half-story house which was billowing heavy smoke.

Firefighters began to fight the fire and conduct a search for persons still inside the home. During the search, an adult female was found inside unconscious. Resuscitation efforts were started by firefighter on the scene. The female was transported by ambulance to Great River Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

The name of the female is being with held pending notification of family. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Burlington police and fire departments, the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
