A Southwest Iowa man charged in Nebraska man’s death

January 7, 2009 By admin

A southwest Iowa man now faces charges in the death of an eastern Nebraska man last fall. Deputies with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s office have arrested Mitch Schard of Council Bluffs. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter and obstruction of justice in connection with the shooting that killed Steve Hurd of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

The incident took place at an apartment in Council Bluffs on October 18. Schard is accused of owning the gun used in the shooting, which authorities say was accidental.

Police say Shane Hollenbach was the man that shot Hurd. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in December and faces up to two years in prison when he’s sentenced next week.
