Months of work come to fruition as the Winter Iowa Games open in Dubuque. This will be the first of three consecutive weekends of competition.

Iowa Games executive director Jim Hallihan says his staff spends many hours planning the event. He says the winter games don’t take quite the number of hours as the summer games, but it is still a lot of work.

Friday night’s festivities are capped off by the opening ceremonies at he Five Flags Center. that includes the parade of athletes, the name of their team, words about sportsmanship and the oath of athletes and oath of parents, followed by fireworks.

Youth wrestling will be held in Perry but all of the other events this weekend will take place in Dubuque. Hallihan expects a good turnout but does not think last year’s record of 3,800 participants will be eclipsed.
