The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is encouraging large livestock and poultry producers to call and report estimated emissions of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide as required by a new E.P.A. rule.

Kathy Lee, a senior environmental specialist at the D.N.R., says the rule only applies to large lots. Lee says producers who call will be given an incident number and then they’ll have to follow-up with calculation worksheets to determine if they exceed threshold quantities.

The reporting deadline was January 20th and while that’s passed, Lee says Iowa operations still need to report and not fear a 25-thousand dollar fine for late reporting. Lee says to call the D.N.R. between 8 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday at 515-281-8694 and not report through D.N.R. field offices.
