A Michigan-based utility is announcing plans to build a network of transmission lines, part of which would run through northwest Iowa.

According to an announcement made yesterday, ITC Holdings Corporation’s 3,000-mile transmission project, called the "Green Power Express," would travel through Iowa and six other upper midwest states.

It would move 12,000 megawatts of wind power. The company says the ten-to-12-billion dollar project addresses the lack of electric transmission infrastructure needed to integrate renewable wind energy. An ITC concept map shows two transmission lines in northwest Iowa. One would extend from a substation at Fort Thompson in South Dakota into an area north of Sioux City.

The other line would run from a substation at Lakefield, Minnesota south into northwest Iowa along Highway 71. The two lines would converge at a substation somewhere in the area of Buena Vista and Sac counties.
