Eagle Grove to honor fallen Boy Scout

February 18, 2009 By admin

Next Tuesday, the town of Eagle Grove will remember Aaron Eilerts on what would have been his 15th birthday. Eilerts was among four Boy Scouts killed when a tornado hit their western Iowa camp last June.

The day will be marked by students from Robert Blue Middle School in sewing pillowcases, repairing and cleaning duck houses for the Wright County Conservation and providing meals in a shoebox for Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

At 2:15 Tuesday afternoon, a ceremony at Robert Blue Middle School will feature Governor Chet Culver, several members of Aaron’s Boy Scout Troop from Humboldt and members of the Eilerts family. In the evening, the day will conclude with a band concert at 7:30 in the Middle School Auditorium followed by the lifting of 15 Sky Lanterns in the night sky to honor his birthday.

There will be many Iowa communities that will take part in volunteer efforts in remembrance of Aaron Eilerts. Last summer, Governor Culver signed a proclamation marking February 24th as a Day of Service and Giving in Iowa to remember the Boy Scout from Eagle Grove.
