Webster City hosts "Chillympics"

February 21, 2009 By admin

When life hands you lemons, the old adage says to make lemonade. So when winter blasts you with snow and icy winds, you bundle up and hold a Chillympics. The second annual event is underway in Webster City today (Saturday).

One of the organizers, Tyler Abens, says there will be all sorts of frozen fun. Events include: the frozen turkey toss, sledding relay, snow volleyball and toilet seat horseshoes. There’s also a bonus event called the polar plunge where participants leap into a pool of near-freezing water.

The event is sponsored by Webster City HYPE or Helping Young People Engage. HYPE’s Crystal Theo says some of this year’s events are based on the success of last year’s premiere. Snow volleyball was such a popular event in 2008, this year there will be a full snow volleyball tournament at Briggs Woods Park. Theo says the roster has been expanded a little.

There’s a snow dodgeball tournament in addition to frozen turkey bowling and a 5-K run beginning at 8:00 AM at the park, just south of Webster City. For more information, visit: “ www.wchype.com ” or call (515) 835-2428.
