The 2009 Girls state golf tournaments begins today in Marshalltown. The Class 1A and 2A tournaments will be at the American Legion Course. The Class 3A and 4A tournaments will be played at the Elmwood Country Club.

Legion Professional, John Schrempf says with the rain, the rough has grown and could be a factor in the scores. He says the grass was thinner last year as some of the grass died out.

Marshalltown Girls Coach Linda Bloom says the Elmwood Course fairways are in good condition but the rough will impact scores there as well. She says the winter kill made the fairways much different than this year and says the course will be a good test.

Schrempf is hopeful the golfers will get some good weather for the two days. He says the course is set up well and good weather would make it better. The 4A girls field looks to be a two team race, according to MHS coach Linda Bloom who’s Bobcat team is also in the field.

She says Ankeny is the favorite based on their qualifying score, but she says Ames is also a team that is going to challenge. The championship round is scheduled for Tuesday.
