A Northwest Airlines plane carrying 181 passengers made an emergency landing in Waterloo this morning.

The 757 took off from Detroit and was bound for Los Angeles. Waterloo Police Captain John Beckman says the plane’s crew reported a "smoky odor" in the cabin and diverted to Waterloo as a precaution.

"The plane safely landed at 10:15 and taxied on its own power to the ramp…fortunately it was a non-event. No one was injured," Beckman said.

Northwest sent mechanics from Minneapolis to Waterloo to inspect the plane.

"Whatever caused the smoke to form in the cockpit had abated itself," Beckman said. "The passengers were ruitinely removed from the aircraft. There was no emergency departation."

Waterloo city officials arranged had food and beverages delivered to the airport for the passengers and crew of the airplane. Some of the passengers spent their day at the local Isle of Capri Casino as they waited to board another plane for L.A.
