Grant will help fund efforts to increase science, math teacher numbers

June 9, 2009 By admin

Iowa’s schools should be seeing more science and math teachers in the coming few years. The Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership has won a large grant to encourage more students at Iowa’s three public universities to pursue majors and careers as middle and high school math and science teachers.

The money’s used in part for scholarships and requires recipients to teach in high-needs areas after graduation — like schools where there’s a high teacher turnover rate or a high percentage of student poverty. The five-year grant for $900,000 is from the National Science Foundation.
