Bicyclist struck, killed on northern Iowa highway

August 19, 2009 By admin

A northwest Iowa man bicycling on a highway was struck and killed by a van yesterday.  The accident happened just south of Fostoria, in Clay County.

Officials say 58-year-old Mark Anderson from rural Clay County was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clay County Medical Examiner. Investigators say Anderson was riding his bike south on the highway when he was struck by a van driven by 21-year-old Cameron Koopman of Brewster, Minnesota.

The deputy on the scene says it’s not clear how fast Koopman’s van was going at the time of the accident. Koopman voluntarily submitted a blood sample to authorities. Investigators say they couldn’t find any evidence of evasive action on the part of Anderson or Koopman, and criminal charges are a possibility.
