The latest crop report says about two-percent of the soybean crop is harvested. The report says only about 22-percent of the state’s corn crop is safe from frost. That’s somewhat ahead of last year — but 11-days behind the five year average for corn maturity at this time in September.

The general manager of the Gringer grain elevator near Iowa City, Terry Trenkamp, says the rain dampening the state’s corn fields could speed crop maturity. He says a small amount of rain and some sun and warm weather could speed up the process as it loosens the husk on the corn and gets the crop to mature. Trenkamp says his grain elevator hasn’t yet received any new crop soybeans.
