Someone bought a lottery ticket in West Des Moines that’s now worth $1 million.  The ticket was purchased at the Hy-Vee grocery store right across the street from Valley West Mall.

The winning ticket matched the first five numbers in Saturday’s Powerball drawing. But it missed the sixth number, which is called the Powerball. Matching those five numbers automatically made the ticket worth $200,000, but the person who bought the ticket spent another dollar for the so-called “Power Play” option, so the ticket’s value increased to a million dollars.

This is the third time this year a Powerball ticket sold in Iowa reached that million dollar level.   Two couples who were camping at the Iowa State Fair bought a million dollar Powerball ticket at a Pleasant Hill gas station.  A Marshalltown man bought a $1 million Powerball ticket at a local convenience store in February.

This past Saturday’s Powerball jackpot was $189 million.  A ticket sold in Florida matched all six numbers.  The jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing returns to $20 million.
