The Iowa basketball team came into the season with low expectations but even so, the season got off to an alarming start on Sunday night. Texas-San Antonio opened the second half with a 14-0 run and went on to post a 62-50 win in Iowa City. It is Iowa’s first season opening loss since 1978 and it had been 46 years since the Hawks lost a home opener.

The Hawks hit just 34 percent for the game, including 18 percent from three point range. Iowa coach Todd Lickliter says they hit only 5 of 27 from three point range and he says it will be tough if they shoot that poorly. The Hawks won’t have much time to regroup. They host A Duquesne team on Tuesday night that opened the season on Friday with a victory over Nicholls State.

Lickliter says Duquense is probably better than San Antonio, as they played in the NIT last year and he says they are really good. He says if they play good defense they will be okay, they just need to find a way to get comfortable with shooting the ball.

Freshman Eric May led Iowa with 13 points.
