A Republican candidate is seeking the job of state attorney general. Thirty-three-year-old Brenna Findley says it’s time for current office-holder, 65-year-old Democrat Tom Miller, to go.

“What I hear as I talk to Iowans is they want open, accountable and transparent state government,” Findley says. “The current attorney general was (first) elected in 1978 and they’re ready for some change, ready for a clean-sweep.”

As for transparency, Findley says as attorney general she’d post more information about the office on-line so more Iowans would “know what the attorney general is doing” and could submit their input.

Findley has worked on Republican Congressmen Steve King’s staff since 2003. She is currently the congressman’s chief-of-staff for his D.C. office. “I’m an attorney, born and raised on a farm near Dexter, so I understand what it’s like to be in rural Iowa and grow up on a farm,” Findley says.

“I went to college at Drake and law school at the University of Chicago. After law school I was in private practice where I worked both in corporate work and also in litigation, and then I joined Congressman Steve King’s staff where I’ve been serving the 32 counties in western Iowa for the last seven years.” Findley has maintained Dexter as an “official residence,” although she doesn’t have a home there.

“I’ve been registered to vote in Iowa ever since I turned 18 in 1994,” Findley says. “I’ve been engaged in Iowa politics, been an Iowan — paying taxes and Dexter’s been my residence.” No other Republican candidate has come forward to run for attorney general. Democrat Tom Miller is expected to seek reelection to a seventh term as attorney general.
