To raise money for a charity, law officers in more than a dozen Iowa communities will be raising themselves up in the air this morning and through the weekend. The effort called Cop on Top is getting underway at a chain of discount department stores. Brian Bodenberger, from the Fort Dodge Correctional Institution, is taking part.

“It’s a fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics of Iowa and all of the money stays in Iowa,” Bodenberger says. “We have a manlift at Walmart and one person is up in the lift with a megaphone. We have people at each store and we’ll be giving out candy.” Donations at one Iowa store last year topped five-thousand dollars.

The Cop on Top events will be held outside Walmarts in several Iowa cities, including: Ames, Altoona, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Council Bluffs, Des Moines, Iowa City, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights. They’re scheduled to run 8 A.M. to 8 P.M. today and tomorrow, and from 9 to 3 on Sunday.
