Police and dive teams are out in Polk County searching for a person who is missing after three cars were swept into floodwaters early this morning. Polk County Emergency Management director A.J. Mumm says dispatch received a 9-1-1 call around 3:53 this morning, but the call was dropped after a couple of comments.

The call was tracked and they discovered that three cars were involved. Mumm says most of the people involved were able to get to safety. He says there were approximately 11 people involved, and after a quick search they were able to find 10 of the people, but one still remains missing.

Mumm says dive teams are hampered by the heavy flow of water in the creek. Mumm says the location is just east of Altoona, west of Mitchelville and just south of I-80. He says it’s called Mud Creek and normally it doesn’t get much attention and is pretty tame, but he says it has swelled many, many times with the heavy rain. Mumm says there have also been some other problems in Polk County with Four Mile Creek.

Mumm says Four Mile is causing a lot of problems on the east side of Des Moines and there are two areas where people were being evacuated by boat. Mumm says around 140 people live in the two areas that are being evacuated.
