Delaware County man killed by train in his own driveway

August 12, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A northeast Iowa man is dead after a truck-train collision. A Delaware County man was killed when his pickup was struck by a train in his own farm driveway southwest of Ryan.

The Iowa State Patrol says 68-year-old Kenneth Sweet was leaving his driveway when his truck was struck in the passenger side by a Canadian National train around 7:30 Wednesday morning. Officials estimated that the train was traveling no more than 25 mph.

Warning signs and flashers are not required at private crossings, nor are trains required to sound a warning whistle.
