More thunderstorms are expected to roll over Iowa today, prompting new warnings about fast-rising water. A Flash Flood Watch is posted for much of the state until late tonight, according to meteorologist Kenny Podrazek at the National Weather Service.

Storms will start developing at midday across west-central and north-central Iowa and eventually moving to the south and east through the afternoon. Podrazek says there’s the potential for heavy rain and severe weather. Compounding the problems, an Excessive Heat Warning is also in effect for dozens of Iowa counties.

That warning is for Iowa’s southern half, generally along Interstate 80 and south, with heat indexes expected as high as 112-degrees this afternoon. A cold front should be arriving with the storms which Podrazek says should mean cooler highs this weekend in the 80s and lows into the 50s and 60s.
