Man drowns after pretending to drown

August 16, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Horseplay and alcohol may have played a role in a drowning early this morning in western Iowa’s Carter Lake. Officials say man in his 50s was fishing with his friends after the lake closed late Sunday night.

Just before one A.M., he jumped from a boat into the lake and pretended to drown. A short while later, he went under the water and failed to resurface. Authorities estimated the man was underwater for seven to 10 minutes before two friends were able to pull him out, with police assistance.

Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The man later died at an Omaha hospital. His name was being with pending notification of family. Officials say empty cups at the scene indicated that alcohol might have played a role in the incident.
