The executive director of the Iowa Egg Council is hoping a national recall of millions of eggs from an Iowa company won’t drive down demand. Kevin Vinchattle hopes the recall won’t have a lasting impact.
“It’s an ongoing long-term situation because it’s a food source that people depend on and rely on,” Vinchattle says, “So I think in terms of in the long-term we’ll just have to see what happens. Our goal is that something like this is an isolated incident (that) gets handled and corrected so consumers can have confidence in the product. And I think they do. I think demand will remain good.”
Vinchattle says they want to acknowledge the problem and prevent any other cases. “We want to understand what if anything happened and what are steps if any we need to take to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future,” Vinchattle says.
The recall — which Radio Iowa first reported on Monday— includes eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, and is linked to several illnesses in Colorado, California and Minnesota. The eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and food service companies in Iowa, California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The eggs are packaged under the brand names including Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
