Wednesday’s congressional hearing on the salmonella outbreak in eggs included more than just testimony from the owners of the Iowa egg farms behind the problem Wright County Egg owner Jack DeCoster was just settling in to begin his prepared remarks to the House committee when an animal rights protester stood up, unveiled a banner and started shouting.

He said that “DeCoster and his co-horts” are just a piece of the larger picture. And salmonella poisoning is present in all egg farms as admitted by DeCoster’s lawyer and millions of chickens are killed each year on egg farms.

The protester went on for a couple of minutes before he was escorted out of the hearing room. That was not the only heated exchange during the hearing as later two congressman clashed over whether it was a Democrat or Republican holding up the new F.D.A. food regulations.
