Iowan one of 9 killed in Afghanistan helicopter crash

September 23, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A Muscatine man is among nine American troops who died Tuesday in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. He is 39-year-old Major Robert F. Baldwin.

Baldwin and four others who were killed were assigned to 101st Combat Aviation Brigade of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, which deployed in March.

Four members of the Navy also were killed. Baldwin was assigned to the brigade headquarters. The Department of Defense says the crash took place during combat operations while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The crash was the worst coalition helicopter crash in Afghanistan in four years. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
