Southwest Iowa man dies in accident near Council Bluffs

October 11, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

A southwest Iowa man died and three people were hurt in a crash Sunday night south of Council Bluffs. Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County say the victim was the 71-year old driver of a pickup pulling a trailer loaded with small hay bales.

The vehicle was turning left at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Overland Trail, when another vehicle tried to pass on the left. The driver of the pickup was ejected during the crash. Two teens in the truck were injured, but the driver’s wife, who was also in the truck, was not hurt.

Authorities say the driver of the other vehicle reported minor injuries. The driver of the truck was flown to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he later died. No names had been released as of early this morning. The accident, which happened at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, reportedly shut down traffic on both roads, for about two hours.
