Two women were shot, one to death, in Des Moines last night and police say the suspected gunman killed himself. Sergeant Jeff Edwards says police were called to a house on the capitol city’s east side shortly before midnight.

Officers found both women had been shot while they were sitting in a parked car in the driveway of the home they shared. Twenty-four-year-old Carrie Russell was shot to death in the passenger seat while her roommate, 56-year-old Leona Fatino, had been shot in the leg.

Fatino was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Sergeant Edwards says investigators quickly learned that an acquaintance of Russell was the suspect. The body of 25-year-old Robert Sears was found at his home a few hours later, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The motive in the shootings is still unknown. Edwards could not elaborate on the relationship between Russell and Sears, only to say they knew each other.
