Two western Iowa men die in Pottawattmie County accident

October 18, 2010 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Two cousins from western Iowa died Saturday during a single-vehicle crash in Pottawattmie County. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department has identified the victims as 26-year old Cory Geise of Council Bluffs, and 25-year old Josh Royer, of Underwood.

Officials are still trying to determine why the accident occurred just north of Council Bluffs. They say the men were traveling north on Mudhollow Road in a 2002 Honda S-2000, when Geise lost control of the sports car. The vehicle left the road and entered a ditch on the west side of the road before rolling onto its top.

Investigators say there was no evidence alcohol was a factor in the crash, which happened at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. According to reports, Geise had been at a nephew’s flag football game Saturday afternoon and was heading to the home of a friend of his mother’s to eat chili when the crash occurred. He’d been discharged from the Army a little over a month ago, after having served in Iraq and Haiti.

Geise recently returned to college to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He obtained an Associate degree from Iowa Western, before enlisting in the military. The men’s funerals will be held later this week in Council Bluffs.
