The driver of a motorcycle involved in an accident Tuesday in Des Moines has died and police are looking for help in piecing together the cause accident. Police department spokesman, Jeff Edwards says 55-year-old Raymond Wilkins of Des Moines suffered serious head injuries in the accident. Sergeant Edwards says Wilkins was alone on the cycle and they don’t know what caused the crash.

Edwards says the street is being worked on and there is a large metal plate across the street, but he says it appears Wilkins went down before he got to the plate and that is not believed to be a factor in the accident. He says they are looking for witnesses who might be able to help in the investigation. Edwards says Wilkens was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Edwards says Wilkins had a helmet, but it was strapped onto the back seat rest. “Had he been wearing the helmet, can’t say that it would have resulted differently, but certainly wouldn’t have hurt,” Edwards said. Edwards says they hope traffic investigators will get enough information to determine how the accident happened.
