Omaha baseball team changes name

November 16, 2010 By Matt Kelley

The Omaha Royals are no more. The metro area minor league team unveiled its new nickname and logo late Monday. The Omaha Storm Chasers will open the 2011 season at the new Werner Park at 126th and Highway 370 in Sarpy County. President Alan Stein says the team will use the new nickname beyond baseball.

“We’re going to be able to get into schools and work with kids and do math and science and all the things that have to do with weather,” He says. Stein says the team must also establish itself as a valued member of the community and there are many educational opportunities.

“We think with our mascots, Stormy and Vortex, that we’ll have some impact in exciting more kids to be inspired into science, math and technology,” Stein says. Stein says the plan is to utilize the nickname to inspire children to hit the books and focus on math and science.

“We are about baseball and about fun but if we can do some good in that area, it is a home run for us too,” Stein said. The Storm Chases home opening at the new Werner Park is April 15th.
