State ceremony recognizing Medal of Honor winner set for Tuesday

November 19, 2010 By Dar Danielson

The details have been set for the statehouse ceremony Tuesday for the Medal of Honor winner from Iowa. The ceremony for Army Staff Sergeant Sal Giunta will be at 11:30 in the capitol rotunda with a public receiving line after the ceremony in the Governor’s formal office.

Giunta received the military’s highest award, from President Obama this week for courageous actions in battle in Afghanistan in 2007. He is the first living service member to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and the only living Iraq or Afghanistan veteran to receive the award.

Giunta graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School in 2003. There will be a parade in his hometown of Hiawatha Tuesday evening to honor him.
