The first day of winter is still about a month away, but this morning, a Winter Weather Advisory covers 11 counties in northwest Iowa. A mix of snow and rain is likely. Also, a Freezing Rain Advisory covers another 15 counties across northwest and north-central Iowa. National Weather Service meteorologist Mindy Behrens says roads may be dicey until midday.

A lot of moisture is surging northward with drizzle and light rain falling as temperatures fall below freezing and continue falling this morning. Behrens says the precipitation should end sometime after lunchtime. Temperatures should rise above freezing for a few hours this afternoon with ice accumulations of one-tenth of an inch or less. Behrens says the updated forecast for the busy four-day travel holiday isn’t the greatest, as low temps may be dipping into the teens.

There’s a chance of rain on Wednesday with snow possible north of Iowa Wednesday into Thursday, though conditions in Iowa should remain dry on Thanksgiving Day. She says highs later this week should be in the 30s and 40s across Iowa.
