Iowa falls to Wake Forest on last second shot

December 1, 2010 By Todd Kimm

J.T. Terrell drilled a three pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining as Wake Forest edged the Iowa Hawkeyes 76-73 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Terrell’s game winner came just seconds after Iowa’s Matt Gatens missed two shots that could have given the Hawkeyes the lead.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says there were a lot of positive things as they out rebounded Wake and were able to execute their offense. He says the disappointing thing was that they had a stretch at the end of the half where they didn’t play well defensively and then another stretch where they couldn’t make a basket.

The Hawkeyes led by as many as 18 points in the opening half but the defense faltered in the second half as Wake Forest built a ten point advantage. He says in the second half they became content to trade baskets with the lead and all of a sudden they couldn’t make a basket and Wake caught fire.

Terrell finished with seven three pointers and 32 points. Eric May led Iowa with 18 points. McCaffrey says there were a lot of positives, but they have to be sure their defense doesn’t falter when they are having trouble making baskets.

Iowa falls to 3-4 on the season and next up will host Idaho State on Saturday.
