Iowa Medal of Honor winner gets new honor in NYC

December 22, 2010 By Matt Kelley

That Medal of Honor winner from eastern Iowa is back in the news — with another unusual honor.

Army Staff Sergeant Sal Giunta was awarded the military’s highest honor by President Obama in a White House ceremony last month for his bravery in battle in Afghanistan.

The 25-year-old Giunta is about to get more national TV exposure. He’ll again be the center of attention as he joins New York City’s mayor in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

The Hiawatha native will be given the honor of pressing the ceremonial button at one minute to midnight to lower the giant, shining ball to start the 60-second countdown to ring in 2011.
