A political website reports Iowa Congressman Steve King said during an interview he’d ask kids as young as kindergarten for their opinions about abortion. King, a Republican from Kiron, says his statement wasn’t aimed specifically at five and six-year-olds.

“I don’t expect the kindergartners to remember it, let alone attempt to understand it,” King says. “They will be challenged for the most profound question of their lifetime which is, what is your position on abortion? I’m really talking to the middle school and high school people in particular.”

King defends his views which define human life as “sacred” and beginning at conception, not birth. “Their life is sacred, the person next to them’s life is sacred, in all of its forms,” King says. “Then I ask them, at what instant does life begin and you must chose an instant. You can’t take a chance with life and there’s only one instant and that’s the instant at conception.”

King isn’t the first person to be spotlighted for expressing views on abortion to elementary school children. In October, Ohio Representative Jean Schmidt made headlines after discussing the issue with children in a first-grade classroom in Ohio.
