A western Iowa couple will tie the knot tonight in front of thousands of hockey fans. Jennifer Simmons of Carson and her fiancé Chip entered a contest on an Omaha radio station to get married during tonight’s Omaha Maverick’s Hockey game.

“We never intended to win but we did discuss it and we said if we win, we’re going for it,” Simmons said. “We were a little shocked, but they called so we are going to get married on the ice.”

The ceremony at the Qwest Center will be an all-night affair. “It is going to start right before the game and it is going to go throughout the entire game, so every time there is a little break there is going to be more of the wedding,” Simmons said.

As part of the package, a local shopping area will provide the newlyweds with a $500 gift card. The University of Nebraska-Omaha is providing a photographer, videographer, cake, hotel rooms and more.

Simmons says her parents seem to be taking the unusual wedding plans in stride. “I think my mom said it best. She said somehow she knew when we got married it was going to be outrageous, fun and completely over the top,” Simmons said.

A radio deejay will perform the ceremony. Simmons will throw her bouquet from the upper bowl down to the lower bowl of the arena.
