A man is in custody after leading police on a high speed chase through Polk and Warren Counties this morning. The incident began around 5:20 a.m. in Des Moines when an officer stopped a Dodge Neon for traveling 43 in a 40 mile-an-hour zone. The driver sped away as the officer went to the squad car to verify the driver’s name. Police say the motorist gave at least two false names.

The chase lasted for nearly an hour, with the Dodge Neon hitting speeds of more than 90 miles per hour on Interstate 235 and I-35. Police finally caught up with the motorist in southern Warren County using spikes to pop the car’s tires. At least two Des Moines Police squad cars also had tires punctured by the “Stop Sticks.”

The driver, who’s true identity has yet to be released, was in custody by 6:15 a.m.
