For those tired of the winter weather, we’ve hit a milestone that signals spring is on the way. Iowa D-N-R state parks chief, Kevin Szcodronski, says Sunday (February 27th) marked the unofficial countdown to camping. Memorial Day is now three months away and that opens the window to allow people to begin making reservations via the on-line system for that weekend.

Szcodronski says Memorial Day is also the first test of a new reservation system that the D-N-R is now using. He says they are now using a company called “Active Outdoors” that uses the Reserve America system that is used in other states. He says there will be a different look and feel to the site that everyone will have to get used to.

Everyone will have to create a new account on the system to make reservations for this year. Szcodronski says the budget situation will have an impact when people start getting out into the camping areas. Szcodronski says people will notice a lot less maintenance and less mowing in some areas. He says they are going to focus on keeping the campgrounds and lodges in good shape, so those who don’t go beyond the campgrounds might not notice a lot of difference.

You can go on-line 24-hours a day at:iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com to make your reservation.
