A huge seventh inning allowed the Iowa baseball team to break out for its first Big Ten victory. The Hawkeyes scored ten runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to roll past Michigan State 19-7 on Sunday as they avoided the three game sweep.
The Spartans had won the first two games of the series. Iowa jumped on top by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second but at one point trailed 5-3.
Iowa coach Jack Dahm saves every team goes through a spell where they have a hard time getting hits with people on base, and they were able to do that this time. And he says they did not panic when the Spartans came back. Shortstop Kurt Lee had two of the Hawkeyes’ 17 hits.
Matt Dermody went seven innings on the mound to notch his second win of the season as Iowa improves to 1-2 in the Big Ten and 10-15 overall.
