A central Iowa man is facing charges after police say he robbed a restaurant last night and led officers on a 50-mile long chase. Sixty-year-old Gary Dean Mumford of McCallsburg is accused of pulling out a handgun at Smashburger in West Des Moines. Police did not say whether he stole any money from the restaurant, but no one was injured.

Officers chased Mumford as he drove away from Smashburger around 8:30 p.m. Mumford sped through Polk and Story Counties before his vehicle entered a ditch near Story City. Police say Mumford reached speeds of up to 115 miles per hour before he was captured around 9 p.m.

Mumford is charged with first-degree robbery, eluding and possession of a weapon as a felon.
