Davenport police say driver in fatal crash was drunk

April 6, 2011 By Radio Iowa Contributor

Davenport Police say a young man killed in a one car crash last month was drunk. The accident happened the night of March 21 at a north Davenport intersection. According to witnesses, 24-year-old Justin Michael Welch of Davenport was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control after passing a car.

His vehicle jumped a curb and collided with two light poles. Welch was the lone occupant and died at the scene. Davenport Police have completed their investigation of the crash. Police Captain David Struckman says the wreck was caused by excessive speed, loss of control and driver impairment due to alcohol consumption.

He says Welch’s blood alcohol content was more than four times the legal limit.
